Denafrips Terra is an MCLK master clock generator intended for high-end audio systems. Its task is to provide a timing reference to the system, using oven-controlled OCXO crystal oscillators. The design integrates dedicated output frequencies and 75-ohm BNC connections, offering a solution specifically intended for audio configurations compatible with an external master clock.

Terra uses two OCXO crystal oscillators specified for frequencies of 45.1548 MHz and 49.152 MHz. The oscillator oven control is part of the product’s technical configuration and contributes to generating an accurate and stable clock reference. The generated signal can be used, when supported by the connected device, to synchronize audio components equipped with a compatible MCLK input.

Master clock generator for audio systems

In a digital chain, the clock establishes the timing reference used to manage audio data. Denafrips Terra is designed specifically as a dedicated MCLK unit: it is not a DAC, not a streamer and does not perform the functions of an audio source. Its role is to provide clock outputs to devices designed to receive this type of signal.

The configuration includes both a fixed clock output and an adjustable clock output, as indicated in the product specifications. The value associated with the fixed output is not specified in the available data, while the adjustable output is intended for selecting the compatible frequencies listed for Terra. The availability of adjustable frequencies allows the generator to be configured according to the requirements of the connected system, provided that the latter supports the selected clock connection and format.

OCXO oscillators and power supply

The heart of Denafrips Terra consists of OCXO crystal oscillators, namely oscillators with oven control. The indicated nominal reference frequencies are 45.1548 MHz and 49.152 MHz, with two outputs for each frequency. This architecture is intended to provide a highly accurate and stable clock signal within a compatible audio system.

The oscillators are powered by a high-current multi-stage linear power supply, combined with an oversized O-Core transformer. The power supply design is therefore an integral part of the Terra solution and supports the clock-generation section. The declared power consumption is equal to or less than 20 W.

The combination of OCXO oscillators, multi-stage linear power supply and selectable frequencies is intended to generate a stable timing reference. Terra is therefore intended for those who wish to add a dedicated master clock to their audio chain, after first verifying the presence of a compatible input on the component to be synchronized.

Available output frequencies

Denafrips Terra supports several output frequencies, with values associated with the main digital references listed in the specifications. The available options are:

• 45.1548 MHz x 2;
• 49.152 MHz x 2;
• 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz;
• 11.2896 MHz and 12.288 MHz;
• 22.5792 MHz and 24.576 MHz.

The “x 2” designation indicates the availability of two outputs for the 45.1548 MHz and 49.152 MHz frequencies, while the other frequencies are listed as selectable values of the generator. The frequency adjustment must be carried out according to the connected device and its synchronization specifications. Before installation, it is therefore advisable to check the type of input required by the DAC or other audio electronics concerned.

75-ohm BNC connections

Terra’s outputs use BNC connectors with a declared impedance of 75 ohms. This information is important when choosing cables and correctly integrating the unit with equipment featuring clock inputs of the same type. The connection is not universal: compatibility must be verified both for the connector and for the frequency supported by the receiving device.

The presence of fixed and adjustable clock outputs expands configuration possibilities, but does not replace checking the specifications of the connected components. Terra must be integrated into a system that provides an MCLK or clock input compatible with the 75-ohm BNC signal. The supplied data does not indicate compatibility with specific devices; therefore, verification must be carried out on a case-by-case basis.

Form factor, power and installation

Denafrips Terra features a Small Form Factor, with declared dimensions of 340 mm in width, 260 mm in depth and 66 mm in height. The stated height also includes an additional 18 mm for the feet. The weight is 6 kg. The finish is available in the black/silver combination, intended to fit into a home audio system or a dedicated setup.

The power requirement is 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, with a manual selector. Before switching the unit on, the selector must be set manually according to the electrical supply being used. The declared consumption is ≤20 W, a value referring to operation of the unit according to the available technical data.

For installation, it is advisable to provide adequate space for the chassis dimensions and BNC connections. The position must allow easy access to the power selector and enable the cables to be connected to compatible devices. The product is supplied as an MCLK unit; the listed package does not include a remote control or power cable.

Who Denafrips Terra is designed for

Terra is intended for those designing or upgrading an audio system equipped with components designed for synchronization via a master clock. It may be considered when a dedicated MCLK source with OCXO oscillators, multiple output frequencies and 75-ohm BNC connections is desired. It is not a product to choose for streaming, digital-to-analog conversion or wireless management functions, because these functions are not indicated for this model.

The choice should begin with a technical check of the system: available input, accepted frequencies, connection type and required impedance. Once compatibility has been confirmed, the adjustable frequencies allow the reference required by the connected component to be selected. The compact structure, 6 kg weight and black/silver finish complete a solution designed to be placed near the other devices in the audio chain.
