AUNE AR5000 & SR7000. Two headphones, one vision
The Chinese company, which over time has built a solid reputation particularly in the field of DACs and headphone amplifiers, has made a powerful entry into the headphone market – a segment historically dominated by giants such as Sennheiser, Hifiman and Beyerdynamic, to name but a few. The result of this entry are two models that differ greatly in philosophy and price, yet share the same obsessive attention to acoustic engineering: the AR5000 and the SR7000. Discussing them together makes perfect sense. These are not simply two products from the same brand, but two chapters in a journey that Aune is building with consistency, from the accessible AR5000 to the ambitious SR7000.
Aune AR5000: the debut that took everyone by surprise
The AR5000 is an open-back headphone featuring a 50mm dynamic driver with an innovative design. The MLD (Multi-Layer Distributed) diaphragm balances rigidity and damping, resolving the breakup issue typical of large-diameter drivers, and delivers a frequency response extending up to 40 kHz. It is based on MLD technology, namely a multi-layer diaphragm in which each layer performs a specific function: some contribute to structural rigidity, others to the damping of resonances. The practical result is that the cone behaves more linearly, reducing distortion at higher frequencies where large drivers tend to lose control.

This technology is complemented by a driver positioning system that is unusual for this price range. The driver’s steeply angled acoustic structure and the ear cup designed at the same angle create a unique acoustic configuration that enhances spatial perception. In terms of build quality, the AR5000 feels like a higher-end headphone. The ear cups can swivel sideways, allowing for a better fit to the shape of the head; the cable is made of braided fabric, simple yet functional; and the ear cup adjustment system, which Aune has patented under the name ‘Concentric Circle’, allows for precise adjustment to different head shapes with a mechanism offering extremely fine-tuned movement. They weigh 350 grams, have an impedance of 28 ohms and a stated sensitivity of 108 dB/Vrms, meaning the AR5000 is extremely easy to drive.
Aune SR7000: technical ambition
The SR7000 represents a complete shift in philosophy; it is, in fact, a closed-back headphone priced at almost double that of the AR5000. Its elegant design and range of accessories are impressive, including a stylish carrying case and two high-quality cables. The driver is made from a ceramic-reinforced polymer composite and offers a very wide dispersion angle. Optimisation using Multi-Layer Distributed (MLD) compensation ensures a uniform response, significantly improving the upper limit of high-frequency extension. But the heart of the SR7000’s innovation is something very ambitious: the system that Aune calls the Dragon Scale Acoustic Prism, which precisely modulates the sound waves coming from the rear chambers, leading to a significant improvement in the soundstage. The concept of acoustic metamaterials is relatively new in the headphone industry; these are structures designed to interact with sound waves in unconventional ways, modifying their propagation in a controlled manner.

Applying this to a closed-back headphone to eliminate reverberation and colouration from the rear chamber is an engineering-wise sophisticated approach, which Aune has chosen as an alternative to traditional sound-absorbing materials and methods. To top it off, the Tilted Acoustic Matrix system, already seen on the SR5000 model, positions the drivers at a steep angle to direct the sound output optimally towards the ear cup. The design is extremely original, with a dark green finish and gold accents, giving a sense of refinement. In terms of comfort, the SR7000 is lightweight at 390 grams and features a self-adjusting leather headband that distributes the weight evenly. Finally, the front-mounted input connectors prevent the cable from rubbing against the shoulders. Included in the package, alongside a fabric and leather carry case, are a balanced cable set with 4.4mm jacks and an unbalanced set with 3.5mm jacks.
Two headphones, one vision
Comparing the AR5000 and SR7000 isn’t simply about choosing which one to buy: it’s about understanding what you’re looking for in a headphone and what listening scenario you have in mind. The AR5000 is an open-back model designed for home use, ideal for long, immersive listening sessions in a quiet environment, with a relaxed, musical sound capable of pleasing listeners with different preferences. The SR7000, on the other hand, is designed for those who want to enjoy the quality of an open-back headphone without sacrificing a certain degree of isolation, and for those willing to invest more in exchange for more advanced technical solutions. What they have in common is that they are products from a company that entered the headphone market with its own ideas, patented technologies, and a determination not to blend in with the crowd.
